Trekkies from StarTrek.com.sg participated in The New Paper (TNP) Big Walk 2004. This year, StarTrek.com.sg invited more Trekkies to take part in TNP Big Walk 2005, and we are glad to see a good turnout of Trekkies to support the healthy lifestyle event organised by The New Paper. The Making of StarTrek.com.sg Banner With the combined efforts from Trekkies Dr EMH, Superstar, lhs1701 and his wife, we have self-created a new banner for the Trekkies contingent to be participating at the TNP Big Walk 2005. Trekkie Dr EMH used his color printer to create an iron-on image of our StarTrek.com.sg logo, while Trekkie superstar ironed the image onto the while banner.
Trekkie Superstar then saw up the two ends of the banner, so that two long bamboo sticks can be slotted into and form the handles of the banner. Most costs of production are contributed by Trekkie Dr EMH.
Some of us came as early as 5.50 am, and we had our breakfast at the McDonald's next to the National Stadium. The rest of the Trekkies gradually arrived before the flag-off time at 7.30 am.
Flag off ... The official flag-off time was 7.30 am. About 1,000 contestants in competitive race started first, while the rest of the 50,000 casual walker followed.
Close-up shoots ... This is the first time StarTrek.com.sg organised a cohort of Trekkies in the participation of the annual Big Walk.
It's also a special and pride moment to carry our own Banner,
giving a wonderful impression to all 50,000 other walkers ... Star Trek fans are here!
Near 50,000 walkers along the new Nicoll Highway
Both competitive and fun walkers would have to complete the 10-KM route along the Nicoll Highway from the National Stadium.
Funny scenes along the Walk The annual TNP Big Walk is never a dull event ... along the journey, there are lots of surprises which amazed, and amused, the participants.
As usual, all participants will receive a free T-shirt at the time of registration. But there is one size of T-shirt for all. As a result, we saw a small girl wearing the T-shirt like a pyjamas, while a "macho" man tore off his T-shirt from behind! Nonetheless, most participants still worn the official T-shirts offered by TNP Big Walk, because they would get an additional free handphone if they happened to be the winners of the first 5 prizes.
Destination accomplished ... The fastest competitive walker completed the entire 10-KM route in less than an hour. Most of the other casual walkers complete the 10-KM journey in about 3 hours.
The Trekkies contingent arrived at the destination around 11.00 am, fully exhausted. Nonetheless, we were all delighted that our had accomplished our mission!
The top 5 prizes of the Big Walk Lucky Draw are only granted to walkers who are physically present. If the lucky number is being called, but the person failed to turn up, the person's chance of winning will be forfeited, and a new lucky number would be called, until a person eventually come forward to claim the prize. The first prize of the Lucky Draw is a brand new car. And as usual, no one respond to the lucky number when it was called. When the 2nd lucky number was announced, we heard a loud commotion behind us ... apparently the number belonged to a group of about 100 students and teachers from a dance school, unfortunately the lucky guy/gal didn't turn up for the event! ... What a shame! Finally, the 3rd number was called, and the car was won by someone from the ocean of walkers downbelow.
Despite we didn't win any prizes from the Big Walk, we did enjoy ourselves with a great experience, as well as a good exercise. We would like to thank all Trekkies who make the activity a great success, and we look forward to see you all in TNP Big Walk 2006!
