StarGazing @ Science Centre

During the March school holiday, StarTrek.com.sg organised an educational outing on Star-gazing at the Singapore Science Centre on 17 March 2006 (Friday).

Several Trekkies and their family turned up for the outing, including Trekkies lanman, Dr EMH, lhs1701, Josh, Fahmi, Daleth, Li Qun, her 9-year old son, and her two parents.

StarGazing @ Science Centre

It was a fine evening with a clear night sky. At 7.30pm sharp, all Trekkies and family assembled at the McDonalds @ Science Centre. We proceed directly directly to the Observatory Dorm together as a group.

As the Friday night is open for public viewing, there was a long queue outside the Dorm. Trekkies and family waited patient along the spiral staircase leading to level 2 where the gigantic telescope was housed.

Hmm ... this facility is indeed an eye-opener!

With our bare eyes, we can see a bright star on the sky.

With the gigantic telescope, we can see the beautiful ring planet - Saturn! ... The 6th planet in our Solar System.

However even with this 200X telescope, Saturn only appear not bigger than a 10-cent coin. Any further enlargement will render the image blurred. Hence we still could not see the surface of Saturn.

Did you see E.T.?

This gigantic 200X telescope cost over S$1 million!

Smaller telescopes for amateur stargazers available for sale outside the observatory dome.

Astronomy Lecture

In the meantime, Trekkie lhs1701 attended an astronomy talk at the lecture theatre on the ground floor of the Observatory.

Deep impact ... will it wipe off the human race?

You can't find this animal in the zoo ...

Supper after StarGazing

After the education trip, we proceed to enjoy our supper at a satay stall run by a friend of Trekkie Fahmi - Taufiq ... no, not the Singapore Idol.
