The Excelsior-class is a Federation starship. It was first launched in 2285 as a testbed for the testbed for the unsuccessful Transwarp drive development project.
The starship was later refitted with a standard warp drive, and became the prototype for numerous other starships built over next several decades.
The Excelsior-class starship was designed by Bill George and built at ILM.
